About
Rocklin Academy
What is Rocklin Academy?
Rocklin Academy is a public, tuition free, charter
school, which was developed by parents and teachers
for the Rocklin area. We are sponsored by the Rocklin
Unified School District.
Mission Statement
Rocklin
Academy is a Core Knowledge, public, charter school
that is committed to providing the Rocklin community
with an educational choice that embodies high standards
and the ongoing use of data to evaluate program and
instructional effectiveness, resulting in high quality
teaching and learning in a nurturing environment.
Working in partnership, teachers and parents inspire
each child in reaching his/her full potential.
Vision
Statement
It
is the goal of Rocklin Academy to:
1.
Provide an outstanding education that challenges and
motivates each child to reach his/her personal best
while becoming a productive and involved citizen.
2.
Facilitate a partnership among the school, parents,
and students, holding all accountable for each child's
academic and behavioral success.
3.
Provide a rich and nurturing environment that recognizes
each child as an individual.
4.
Continuously evaluate curricular and instructional
practices through collaborative inquiry-leading to
increased student achievement and targeted professional
development.
What
is a Core Knowledge Education?
A Core Knowledge education is built upon a detailed
outline of specific content to be taught in language
arts, history, geography, mathematics, science, and
the fine arts. As the core of a school's curriculum,
it provides a solid, coherent foundation of learning;
it is also flexible to meet local needs. This allows
all the curriculum expectations of the California
Framework to be thoroughly covered at each grade level
by Rocklin Academy's teachers. The Core Knowledge
curriculum is the result of research into the content
and structure of the highest performing elementary
school systems around the world.
Why a charter school?
Many parents are seeking high quality educational
choices for their children. Parents want more individualized
attention for students. They want greater participation
in their children's education, and they have high
expectations of personal behavior. Many parents feel
their children are capable of higher levels of academic
accomplishment. Many educators are seeking the opportunity
to create schools that do all these things-schools
free from bureaucracy. A charter school allows both.
Rocklin Academy offers a strong curriculum, outstanding
teaching, a commitment to high standards, full partnerships
with families, and the development of a student's
full potential.
How is a charter school different from other public
schools?
Charter schools offer an important innovation in public
education. They are performance-based schools that
are free from many of the complex regulations that
often constrain innovation in traditional programs.
In exchange for substantial freedom in governance,
programming, staffing and budgeting, the school is
held accountable for student achievement.
How well do Rocklin Academy students achieve?
For 2006, students at Rocklin Academy achieved the
highest Academic Performance Index (API) score of
all schools in Placer County. Rocklin Academy students
scored 943, showing an impressive 11-point increase
and maintaining Rocklin Academy as the highest scoring
school in Rocklin for the last five years. Our students
are also among the highest score students statewide.
What grade levels does Rocklin Academy offer?
For the 2006-2007 school year, we offer grades Kindergarten
through 6th. The school's total enrollment has grown
to 362.
Who are the teachers and what are the projected
student-teacher ratios?
Rocklin Academy has excellent teachers. All of our
teachers are dedicated to their profession, credentialed,
and are fully qualified to teach in California public
schools. Our student-teacher ratios for the 2006-2007
school year are as follows:
Grades
K and 1: 20:1
Grade 2: 15:1
Grade 3: 15:1
Grades
4, 5, 6: 30:1
Where is the school located?
Rocklin Academy is currently located at 6532 Turnstone
Way on the Ruhkala Elementary School campus in Rocklin.
Our office hours are Monday through Friday from 8
a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Who can attend Rocklin Academy?
An enrollment preference is given to residents of
the Rocklin Unified School District. If a class is
oversubscribed, a lottery process is used and then
a waiting list is created and maintained for each
grade level. The siblings of currently enrolled students
also receive an enrollment preference.
How much parental involvement is required?
Rocklin Academy is committed to a full partnership
between the family and school. All parents are expected
to participate as partners in the education of their
child. Each family is required to contribute 30 hours
of volunteer time per school year. There is a wide
range of activities that fulfill these requirements,
such as helping in the class, yard duty, or teacher-requested
tasks in the evening. Many of our families contribute
many more than 30 hours annually. Activities are structured
so that single parents and families where both parents
work outside of the home also have many opportunities
to meet their parental volunteer obligations.
