Western Sierra Sophomore Kaylee Doty Returns as World Champion with her Partner in Chinese Bridge Competition

Kaylee’s road to international acclaim started at the West Coast Chinese Bridge Competition last spring, where she took top honors. In October, Kaylee flew to China for the international competition, held in the city of Kunming, Yunnan province.

Kaylee and her American teammate Charlie Hoffs competed against 400 students from five continents and 96 countries. The duo advanced through nine rounds of competition to take top score in Chinese language proficiency, Chinese culture, and overall artistic performance. Kaylee wowed the judges with a speech delivered in Mandarin, and her performance on the Guzheng, a Chinese harp.

Kaylee’s prize includes a four-year full ride scholarship at the Chinese University of her choice.

CAASPP Data

We recently received final CAASPP scores from the California Department of Education. Since RAFOS opened in 2001, the school has consistently exceeded state and county averages, making 2017 the 16th year in a row that RAFOS students have outperformed their counterparts throughout California. Congratulations to our students, staff, and families for excellent results, yet again!

Western Sierra Highly Ranked by US News and ERP/CBEE

Western Sierra is ranked as the #1 school in the Sacramento area for College Readiness, 65th Best High School in California and 380th in the nation and earned a Gold medal by U.S. News & World Report! Schools are ranked based on their performance on state-required tests and how well they prepare their students for college.

Also, for the 12th year in a row, Educational Results Partnership (ERP) and the Campaign for Business & Education Excellence (CBEE) selected Western Sierra to receive the title of a 2016 Honor Roll School. The Honor Roll is part of a national effort to identify higher-performing schools and highlight successful practices that improve outcomes for students.

Western Sierra students take 1st Place in Annual Code Wars Competition

At the 20th annual HP Code Wars competition held at the company’s Roseville campus on March 4th, WSCA took 1st place in the novice division. Winning programmers Apostolos Delis, Jarod Heng, and Jordan Osterberg faced a wide range of high-tech challenges and competed with 66 teams consisting of 179 students. Western Sierra students Isaac Koerner, Matthew Pilawa, and Elijah Sherratt also participated in the event.

Two WSCA Students Awarded Chinese Youth Ambassador Scholarships

The Jinan-Sacramento Sister City Council has awarded Western Sierra Collegiate Academy sophomores Sophia Rowe and Carina Lim Youth Ambassador scholarships to represent Sacramento on a 11-day trip to Jinan, China. Rowe and Lim will stay with Chinese host families, tour local schools, and visit Jinan government officials to build cross-cultural relationships.

Superintendent Stout, Principal Laura Regan, and fifth grade teacher, Trisha Smith, attended the National Blue Ribbon Ceremony in Washington, D.C. to receive the National Blue Ribbon award on behalf of the students, teachers, staff and parents who worked together to create a learning environment of academic excellence!
